Julia is actively working as a conceptual and editorial photographer, a freelance graphic designer, and a bi-coastal model

Artist’s Statement

As an interdisciplinary artist, I focus on the digital realm with photography and graphic design. The work I create is editorial and commercial, however, outside of creating for brands and such, I work conceptually. This includes fine art photography, and combining some of the abstract themes that I tend to gravitate towards. Through my first two years of college, I developed a love for digital art and graphic design. While graphic design is more business-like, It gave me a space to express my creativity and think differently than I had before. Creating art is meaningful as an artist, as it provides a way to express less talked about emotions, like grief, melancholy, and limerence, as well as being open with myself as an artist. I have a focus on ideas such as childhood nostalgia, and mother-daughter relationships, as well as a reflection of my Korean culture, and how that background has affected me as an adult. I also work with innate themes that come from my lived experiences as a woman, from regaining identity after traumatic experiences, to the apprehension of existing as a woman in a society that is constantly fighting against us. In my work, I use several modes of photography, whether that be film, digital, or cinematography. Through these, I aim to capture both the editorial aspects of my work, but also the more visceral and conceptual framework that reflects my experiences. With graphic design, through the use of the Adobe suite, I can work with clients and brands to help design thoughtful and innovative designs

Diversity Statement

As an artist, but also a human being, it's of utmost importance that every individual I work with feels respected and understood, despite their gender, race, age, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, disability, or socioeconomic status. My services will remain as a space for anyone and everyone to express themselves. As an LGBTQIA+ Asian-American woman who grew up in a rural Oregon town, I understand how it feels to be ostracized because of my appearance and orientation. However, I do recognize the privilege that I have, and am so incredibly grateful to live my life. Especially considering that my culture is not as marginalized as others have been and still are. I am endlessly thankful that I have the option to follow my passions without fearing for my health, safety, or otherwise. Everyday I learn more about the world, my place in it, and how I can become a better person. I strive to never, under any circumstance, have someone feel uncomfortable because of who they are or where they come from. It is my belief that in art spaces without diversity, there is a lack of creativity and innovation, and I am intent on helping to cultivate an environment where artists of all backgrounds can thrive and express themselves in a way that’s impactful to them. In recognition of my privilege, one way that I choose to show my support for others is through charities. I prefer to support causes that are close to me, volunteering my services to multiple organizations that are important to me. I spend a great deal of time as a student and artist discovering ways to make my practice more diverse. I am committed to creating art that amplifies marginalized voices, challenges stereotypes, and promotes empathy and understanding towards all. I believe that art has the ability to inspire social change, and I am dedicated to using my voice to advocate for equality, justice, and representation for all. Additionally, I have strong roots in feminist ideals, including the dismantling of gender roles and misogynist behavior. Being a woman in careers that are male dominated means frequent prejudice towards women and fem-presenting individuals. I will strive to promote female creatives as entrepreneurs and in powerful positions, as well as my own practice as a freelance photographer and graphic designer. In my growth as an artist and student, I will continue to commit to creating safe spaces for people of any background, as that is what we all deserve.
